    Hey Buddy

    Jeremy,

Hey buddy. I hope you are listening wherever you are. None of us are ready to let you go. Please come home when you are ready. So many people miss you and are deeply concerned about you. You have touched so many lives in so many unique ways. Even in your disappearance you brought so many people from many walks of your life together. You united family, friends, co-workers, and so many others who want to help you. That is what you do best – you bless the lives you cross. I have turned to so many of our memories together to keep you fresh and alive. I honor your passion for life, your wonderful sense of humor, the way you make people feel about themselves and the way you make them smile and laugh. I honor the way you make the simplest of things and times fun, the way you bring happiness and laughter into our lives, and the way you make yourself available to your friends and family, unconditionally and selflessly.

I honor all of your many gestures of friendship, your awareness and your presence, and your integrity as a human being, which gives us all something to look up to. We all miss you more than you can know. Please feel that. We are there for you, just like you would be for us. Our search for you, our thoughts of you, our wonderful stories about you, and our prayers for you are all a tribute to your life. It is truly an amazing feat to have the love of so many.

Please hear our call and come home.

    Your friend always,
    Chris Madden

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you my friend. I just want to tell you, wherever you are, that things do get better. I don’t know exactly what your going through right now. But I definetely know what it feels like to feel hopeless, depressed, and alone. If you decided to take a break from the world, I totally understand. Please just call your family and let them know your OK. 2 years ago, I was still a confirmed bachelor that hadn’t been in a serious rellationship in over 10 years. Now I’m with an incredible, loving, and beautiful women and Dad to 3 teenagers. If it can happen to my fat, ugly ass….it can happen to anyone. And maybe that’s not what you want… I don’t know. Man….you’ve just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other and God will take care of the rest. Life is full of ups and downs and if you are down…you can be assured that things will get better. I hope you are well. If you are…please pick up the phone and call your family. They love you very much and need to know that you are OK.

    Google Earth Map: Propagation Analysis

    Google Earth File

Here is a Propagation Analysis for those familiar with Google Earth. It may greatly aid in the narrowing the search efforts. There are two primary areas of focus.

    Instructions:
    1. Load the map.
    2. Open the side-bar on the left.
    3. Expand the Temporary Places file
    4. Uncheck all boxes.
    5. Check commnet -80, Badger X, and the lat/lon blue dot in the Commnet Tower folder.

    Focus 1

Where the green and red overlap should be the primary search area.
Please note, the green areas within 1-2 miles outside of the red should also be searched.
Particularly the West end of Elevenmile Lake and the stream between here and Spinney Res.

    Focus 2

    1. Load the map.
    2. Open the side-bar on the left.
    3. Expand the Temporary Places file
    4. Uncheck all boxes.
    5. Check Badger X, the lat/lon blue dot in the Commnet Tower folder, and the commnet tower.png.

Where the red and yellow areas overlap should be the secondary search area.
Please note, the yellow areas within 1-2 miles outside of the red should also be searched.

    ***PLEASE NOTE***

The green area 1 mile north of the  tower does not have cell coverage and should not be a focus of the search.  Also,  the search should NOT go be beyond the Eastern most border of Spinney which is  also in green.  It is highly unlikely the phone is here as it would have been hitting a different tower (BADGER Y).

Coming from the North, I-25 closed

Just heard I-25 is closed both directions outside castle rock (may be accidents or snow). AN ALTERNATE route to Woodland park is through deer creek (off of south wadsworth) over to highway 67 and down. That might be an options for other people coming from north.

All…This area is suppose to have over a foot, if not 2 foot by tomorrow, of new heavy wet snow. I have ridden dirt bikes in this area before and I seriously wonder if 4WD will even make it up the most gradual graded dirt road. By all means we should try, but does anyone have snowmobiles that could be put to use if needed?

    **Revised Coverage Map from Comnet**

Badger X Quadrant has been mislabeled on the map Comnet provided us earlier. They have called to confirm that Badger X is the southeast quadrant. Again, the search area is a radius of 10 mi around the cell tower in Badger X quadrant, in the southeast direction. Based on info from AT&T and this new info about the mislabling of Badger X – the SE projection makes much more sense to all parties who are working on his cell signal.

UPDATE: Comnet provided us with a detailed coverage map of the area below (click for downloadable PDF). Searches should focus on the pink first, areas with the strongest coverage.

Click here for a printable black and white (and red) PDF showing a closer view of Badger X coverage.

I have tried to contact folks with the Colorado Back Country Horseman Organization. Seeing that ATV or 4WD might have trouble manuevering in the snow, horses would be the next best thing. Are there folks that have been out on horseback? Do we know the location of the fire towers in the area that are accessible by the forest service?

    • Josh Friesema 1:31 pm on April 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I must warn you we’ve had 14″ of snow in that area already and it’s expected to continue coming down through the night and into tomorrow. This will greatly hamper your search efforts and make 4X4 more of a necessity for traveling a lot of those roads.

    Find Jeremy’s Black Honda Accord

Thanks to everyone who is joining us tomorrow. Regarding queries about 4WD vehicles, ATVs, dogs, etc., these are all great ideas, BUT we have to remember that we need to find Jeremy’s 2WD Honda Accord FIRST. It is unlikely he could have accessed difficult terrain with this car. We will do best by driving accessible roads and trail heads, and only intensifying the search with the other resources if we find the car.

    Thanks, Chris Madden.

Don’t want to contradict you Chris but with the change in weather 4WD may be important. There are roads I searched on last Sunday in my 2WD that I doubt I could get through today given the rain and snow.

    New Search: Badger Mountain

UPDATE: Please see revised Comnet coverage map above.

    Hi All,

Based on new cell phone location data, which is much more precise (many thanks again to Comnet, particularly Angie), we will be conducting another search of all the county and other roads in the Badger Mountain area on Saturday morning, 4/24/10. The more folks and cars we have the better. We plan on meeting in front of the Teller County Sheriff’s station at 9:00 AM on Saturday. The office is about 7-8 miles west of Woodland Park on HWY 24, just across the street from a Western gas station. There is a big dirt lot out front and we will meet there. I’ll be in a white Honda Pilot with blue graphics that says Long’s Peak Family and Sports Medicine on the side. Please email me at christophermadden@usa.net if you have any questions, and to confirm that you want to help on the Saturday search so I can get a head count. Topographic maps, National Geographic Maps, and Colorado Gazetteers may all be helpful, and if you have them please bring them. We can make a plan Saturday morning in the lot, then head out.

For those wanting to search tomorrow (Friday 4/23/2010), please start in the Badger X quadrant marked on the cell phone tower map (see updated post regarding the revised Comnet coverage map – the X quadrant is in the SE direction). We request that the adjacent areas also be searched. Please take notes of the areas you have searched and post them on this website to help us better coordinate and avoid duplication (county roads and distances gone, etc.).

Jeremy’s phone definitely communicated with the Badger Mountain tower between Monday (4/12) and Wednesday (4/14), when we last had any sign of it. We plan on dividing and conquering all the roads in the area. Thanks so much to everyone for your help.

    Chris Madden.

Wilkerson Pass Visitor Center (Summit of W. Pass) is closed, but there’s a fair-sized parking lot there. Might make a good staging area. May have open restrooms, too. DeLorme CO Atlas Pg. 49, D-6 & D-7 shows (Forest Road) FR228, among other FR’s and FT’s (Forest Trail). Godspeed and God Bless U All!

I am sure you have already considered this but a friend of mine raises dogs. She is a respected and certified dog breeder. She wondered if you could get ahold of even 2 bloodhounds to help you in the search. With the wooded areas it may help. She says that dogs have such an enormous sense of smell they would help alot. I know that it would be hard to find some of them but even if you could round up 2 it might be a start.

Good luck in the search, I wish I could be there to help.

        Chris,
Could Jeremy have tried to go fishing below the 11 mile res. dam?
Also, what’s the snow like up there? I heard they got 10 inches last night. Are the FS roads passable? Is it worth heading up, can you see anything?

Are people getting out and searching around trailheads to see if perhaps he was the victim of a carjacking? I hate to see people not getting out and taking a look because they are only looking for a car. If you’re already there why not get out for 5 min and take a look around?

Have you been able to put together a possible route he was traveling from the cell tower data?

Westminster to Woodland park to Badger Mtn. via what roads? Time of day?

I’m just having a hard time figuring out why someone would drive from Westminster that late in the day to start a hike up to the top of a mountain. If he left Westminster at noon, seems he wouldn’t have even gotten out of the car until 3pm? That’s a long drive for a short hike. Doesn’t make sense for an experienced hiker to do that this time of year.

    Dear Jeremy,

Hi Jeremy. It’s me, Mom. I have such a deep need to reach out and contact you and make sure you are safe and well. It is my hope and prayer that you will receive this message meant for you. Putting this on this website is the only way I know to possibly and hopefully reach for your hand and touch your heart.

I know your present feelings, which are a direct result of your present circumstances. In our many lengthy conversations over the years and, in particular, over the last year, I have felt what you felt, your feelings have become my feelings. We have always been connected so strongly in spirit that, at times, I sense your feelings before you even express them to me and sometimes know you will call before you even dial the phone. I know that you feel very alone, dropped, kicked and ground into the dirt due to the circumstances that came your way. But, you need to know, whatever has happened or what will happen, you will NEVER lose your value to your family and friends who love you so intensely and care so deeply about you. You are still and always will be priceless to those who DO LOVE you! The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE. You are special—Don’t EVER forget it. You might feel very alone, but trust me, you are not alone. You have a multitude of family and friends who care deeply about you and want to reach out and be there for you. Please let us do just that.

Jeremy, we need you in our world. You have so much to offer everyone you know as well as so much to offer all those you have yet to meet. I think about how much I have learned from you over the years and I am totally amazed at your insights, your precision in facing the world, your ability to read people and their needs so well, and yes, your intense left brained approach to life that has taught me so much (at times, yes, has also frustrated my dominant right brained approach). I think in particular how much Baxter, Parker, Gus, Sheridan, Vivian and Lydia need their Uncle Jeremy in their world to teach them the things only he can teach them, which is so much.

You are more than your body, your physical presence and your material possessions. You are spirit. You have your mind, heart and soul and there is always something to be thankful for (I know you know that). Decide that life is good and that you are special. Steadfastly refuse to let anything steal your joy. Choose to be happy….and YOU WILL BE. Don’t let the pain and frustration of today destroy the joy of all days to come. Don’t judge life by one difficult event. You must keep putting one foot in front of the other and taking your life day by day. There is a brighter tomorrow that is just down the road. DON’T LOOK BACK!!!! YOU ARE NOT GOING THAT WAY!!!!

More than anything, Jeremy, we need to know that you are okay and safe. PLEASE contact one of us and let us know that. When you are ready to come home to us, you will, and we are okay with that. If you need to stay away for awhile to clear your head and heart, by all means do so, but just let someone know you are okay. You need to know that no one is judging you, no one is critical of you. Everyone is concerned about you and needs to know you are safe from harm’s way. Perhaps you will find comfort in knowing your family and friends are supportive of ALL that you do and believe that whatever decisions you make, they will be the right choices for you. We look forward to the day we can welcome you back with open arms and open hearts.

You are my precious son. My heart is broken right now and only you can take away the pain of my broken heart. I need you, Jeremy. As for your family, well, we all feel a huge void in our family right now. Only you can fill that void. Your entire family loves you so very much and needs you in their world. You have left your footprints and presence in our hearts forever!!! I am trying to face each day as a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus on the new day and all the happy memories of you and our times together that I have stored away…perhaps just for this time in my life. If my tears could talk, the life story of my experiences with you, Jeremy, would unfold and deliver sadness, confusion, frustration and mystery at this present time, but also happiness, delight, joy, laughter, pure pleasure and intense pride when my memory bank fully opens and the past comes to light and explodes with wonderful thoughts and feelings that I shared with my wonderful son, Jeremy. How desperately I long for you to be with us and we can experience those wonderful/positive feelings again.

May today there be peace within you. Take good care of yourself and be safe for me. I love you with my entire being!!!

Love and Prayers to you, my son,

    Mom

Wanda, over the years I have thought about you and your kids. To have this situation occur just makes me sad and that your family and you have to go through it is beyond anything I can imagine. I wish there was more I could do for you as you did for me years ago! For now the best I can do is pray and get word out there to others to help look for Jeremy. Your letter to him and your love for him are those that only a mother can know. I will pray strong and hard today that he is found or that some new clue arises. You are in my thoughts and prayers, as well as the girls! If I could I’d give you a hug, shed tears with you and just be there, but I can’t be there, I am here, shedding tears for you and your pain. God be with you and your family and keep Jeremy safe and bring him home safely! Laurie

      To Jeremy’s mother,

As the mother of 3 children, my heart bleeds for you. Your letter has touched something within all mothers. We hold a place in our hearts for our children that is timeless. Sharing their successes and failures, their faults, and yes, their grief.

I pray that Jeremy reads your letter and understands that he is loved, completely, by his family and his friends. I’ve only met him once, when my niece Amy married Tony, but as I read the messages on this website, hear the pain in your words, and feel the love of his friends, I feel as if I know him.

Please stay strong and know that people are praying for your family and for Jeremy.

Is there anyway we can get the detailed date and time of each cell phone ping at the various towers? This way we can better understand if Jeremy was making a loop (a casual drive) or heading towards a destination. We could map it out and get a better understanding of his route.
      Just a thought.

      • lmwong 8:13 am on April 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

We have combed through the available cellular data. It does not appear he made a loop. With the help of Comnet, we believe Jeremy’s last documented location is in the Badger Mountain coverage area. His phone was receiving data from the Woodland AT&T tower followed by Comnet’s Badger tower for 4 consecutive days. We are continuing to work with other cellular companies to analyze and understand the cell data. Keep the thoughts coming!

I work for a company that is a partner of the company that Jeremy works for. I met Jeremy at an event our companies were co-hosting in Kansas City on March 2nd of this year. We had a few of hours of social conversation because we were both traveling to and from Denver on the same flights and we car pooled while in Kansas City. My company was notified that Jeremy was missing by the company he works for.

I noticed that there is no media coverage about Jeremy in the Denver Metro area. Is there a specific reason? Obviously, the more people you can reach the better. If I can be of any assistance with gathering contact information for the major news sources please let me know.

I don’t know Jeremy well, but he really seems like a great guy. Myself and my co-workers who had the pleasure to meet him in March are keeping him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

We went and searched hwy 24 past Lake George to Co rd 31. Off of 31 we went down Forest rd 896 to where it is gated. We also went down 216 off of 31 till it got to dark. The road goes up quiet a ways I think but it was very muddy and we didn’t have our 4×4. We also checked down the roads of Round Mountain Camp off of hwy 24 but when it got to muddy we didn’t go farther.

I just called and gave the store clerk a description of Jeremy and his car and asked that they call Westminster PD if they see anything. I’ll call tomorrow and talk to the owner and see if they can help with the search. Saying prayers in Alaska for you guys!

I am very intrigued with the pinging of the cell towers by Jeremy’s phone. If he went missing on Sunday, I wonder how his cell has stayed charged long enough to last until Wednesday? I have a blackberry and it doesn’t stay charged long at all even if I am not using it. And, if the phone was in one position, would it have roamed on the three towers? Seems like the phone would have to be moving to do that. And if so, why wouldn’t Jeremy have called someone in distress (maybe lost on the trail?) Is there a point in time when Jeremy’s phone went dead, meaning that if you call it goes straight to voicemail? If so, at what point in time was that? Or does it still ring and then message says voicemail if full?
      Thinking out loud,
      Nikki

I don’t know about the charging time, but what if he was trying to make the distress calls while moving that caused the various pings but none of the calls were able to go thru to anyone he was trying to reach? I was wondering if trying to call pings the tower but because of the area the calls don’t actually connect.

Like Jeremy, I also have AT&T service. My sister and I were in the Lake George area this afternoon and I had her dial my cell number, it rang once and went directly into voicemail….as if I had turned it off. I could not receive nor call out until I got within range of the Woodland Park Tower which was before the first turn off road of County 25 going east. Not sure what my coverage would have been going west of Lake George as we didn’t get that far. I like your thinking out loud thoughts Nikki. Good insights.

    4/22/10 Update

We have been working non-stop on trying to better localize Jeremy’s position using cellular phone data.  This is no easy task, and we thank you for your continued interest in helping us find Jeremy!!!  After Jeremy made contact with the AT&T Woodland Park tower, his phone began roaming on several other carrier networks.  Comnet has been wonderful and has localized his cellular phone contact with one of their towers for all dates from 4/11 to 4/14 to an area on or near Badger Mountain (A), NW of Lake George (purple), East of Hartsel (orange) and North of Eleven Mile State Park (yellow) .  We would focus all further search efforts on this area until further information may be available.

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — The family of 39-year-old Jeremy Griess said they feel heartbroken and helpless. It has been more than a week since a roommate last saw Griess.

Griess left his Westminster home on April 11 to pick up some food and never returned. He’s a Nebraska native, but calls Colorado home.
Family members say they need help from people in Southern Colorado to find Griess.

“I’ve jokingly said if he walked in the door, I’d strangle him or hug him — I’m not sure which, but I’ll tell you what, that would be a reward,” said Ted Griess, Jeremy’s father.

Cell phone records show Griess’ phone last sent out a signal from Woodland Park. That’s where his family searched all weekend, but even with dozens of volunteers, they found nothing.

“He’s always got his computer with him. He’s always got his phone with him,” said Cassandra Kanter, Jeremy’s sister. “He’s always communicating. It’s just not like him to not communicate with us.”

Jeremy’s family and friends said they will continue to search.

“His family and friends love him dearly,” Kanter said. “We want him back.”

Griess drives a 1999 black 2-door Honda Accord. It has Colorado license plate: 940JSE. If you think you’ve seen it, call Westminster police immediately at 303-658-4360.

Im finding the car being the key could be any place and if he went down a mountain his black car would be very hard to spot. My feeling is if we could get a group together to look up and down the canyons by foot we might have success. Unless of course the new lead pays off.

KHAS-TV News 5: Minden Family searches for missing son (with video 2:22)

(4/20/2010) By Adam Lefkoe – Nine days ago, Jeremy Griess went missing in Colorado. Griess is originally from Minden. News 5’s Adam Lefkoe spent the day speaking with Jeremy’s parents who had just returned from searching.

As News 5 pulled up, Jeremy’s father was mowing the lawn. He said he just had to do something to take his mind off of all the stress. But more than anything he wants Jeremy on the front of everyone’s mind – always looking.

Resting on the comforts of home, Ted Griess said the last 9 days have felt more like 9 years.

“It has just been sleepless. It has just been endless for the last week and two days,” said Ted.

Ted and his wife Rita found out that Jeremy had gone missing from his Colorado home last Tuesday. Lifelong friends called immediately to begin a search.

“He called that morning and I said when do we leave?” said Darin Haight.

They searched his home, his hangout always waiting on the next lead.
When phone coordinates led the family to the Woodland Park area northwest of Colorado Springs. It was just another crash of emotion.

“Ok, now we are here…now what? And then I realized the vastness of it and it just ripped me apart thinking. He is still lost,” said Ted.

Some of Ted’s other children helped create a website that provides up to date information for people to stay informed. This is the first time Ted had seen it.

“Everytime I see that picture it just bothers me,” said Ted.

No matter the location, Westminster Colorado Police said they need everyone’s help.

“Family he might visit, friends, anywhere he might go because right now we really have no idea where he went,” said Det. Bernard Vonfeldt.

This morning, Ted said he received another glimmer of hope. A woman said she spotted Jeremy’s car outside Victor, Colorado. Ted and his family will continue to search – his life forever changed.

“If I ever see any missing persons bulletins from here on I am helping. Because I have a good hunch that I know what people are going through,” said Ted.

The Griess family is asking for your help.

Visit http://www.JeremyGriess.com to get updated information and a missing person poster you can post in your area.

Kearney Hub: Minden family in Colo. searching for lost son

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Friends and family of a Minden, Neb., native are appealing to the public for help in finding him.

Jeremy Griess, 39, of Westminster disappeared April 11. Family members believe he may have gone into the mountains near Woodland Park.

According to an e-mail from his father, Ted Griess of Minden, Jeremy’s family and friends have been combing the area searching for him for days.

“Needless to say, we’ve been at our wits’ end,” he wrote. “The situation can best be described as the old cliché ‘searching for a needle in a haystack.’”

AT&T released the last coordinates of Jeremy’s cell phone that show he was in the Woodland Park area northwest of Colorado Springs.

“We are now concentrating our search efforts to that area,” Ted Griess wrote. “Unfortunately, the weather has been rainy and overcast. I had contacted the Civil Air Patrol, and they agreed to carry on a search weather permitting.”

A Facebook group called “Help Find Jeremy Griess – Missing since 04/11” now has more than 400 members and asks members to post information about Jeremy to their Facebook pages to increase awareness.

“When you see something like this happen on TV, most, including me, mentally say ‘How bad’ and then go on with our daily lives,” Ted Griess wrote.

“Having been thrust into this type of situation, I feel the pain. Our only hope is we find him before it is too late.”

Jeremy Griess is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has brown hair, hazel eyes and a small scar above his lip. He was last seen wearing jeans, a T-shirt and boots and may have been driving a black 1999 two-door Honda Accord with Colorado license plate 940 JSE.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Westminster Police Department at 303-658-4360.

Anyway, I assume the police are watching his credit card and bank activity and I don’t see how he would be moving around for over a week without them. I wonder if he is using a corporate card. From Victor, towards Canon City, on CO-67

Someone from Victor, CO recalls a car similar to Jeremy’s with a bike rack at the corner of Victor Ave. and 3rd St about a week ago.  She said she really remembers the bike rack.  He was headed toward Phantom Canyon on Country Rd 67.  This road has very steep drop offs.  Based on that information we are also focusing our search efforts today on: Country Rd 67 from Victor to Canon City.

Please note: this is in addition to the focus below on Rampart Range Road.

It’s great to see the family getting some helpful feedback and ideas through this site. I read the thread below as well. It seems like Brad and Brenda had some constructive ideas too. Has a helicopter been utilized yet? Seems like it would be a great asset. If so, hopefully the Griess’ are able to gain access to one, or perhaps this site could be used to help them make contact with someone who can help in this area.

Ted, Wanda, Cass, Tony, Chan, etc. keep your chin up, and try your best to not let discouragement get the best of you. Readers, let’s do our best to find ways to focus on the positives to help fuel the search. I can only imagine how very draining the past ten days have been.

If you click on the Google maps link and switch it to a bike route, it takes you east of Victor and then south on Phantom Canyon Rd. Knowing Jeremy was into biking if he was looking for for new routes this might be the better direction to look than towards Cripple Creek. Also, has his computer history been checked or has anyone gotten a dump of his smartphone internet access. Maybe he was looking for maps of new bike/hike routes that might give some indication of where he was heading last week.

I ran into Brenda today and she alerted me to Jeremy’s situation. I received his last cell ping coordinates and followed CO Rd. 300/320 Rampart Range road and Mt. Herman Rd. from Garden of the Gods to Monument. There are only a couple of spots on the upper part of the road where you can get cell service. I could only check the main roads due to falling light, but there are plenty of side trails where it is plausible that he may have gotten his car stuck and never made it out. Some of these trails are very secluded and vehicle traffic is low. I would exclude Shubarth Rd. from the search, I followed it to the end. Also I didnt get a chance to hike down into the two canyons that follow the CO rd 300 sometimes on both sides. I know of two places where there are multiple cars at the bottom. The most efficient way to scan the Rampart Range would be by helicopter. Otherwise it could take days with a full strength search team. Best of luck to everyone involved, let me know if there is anything more I can do to help.

Hello- just finished up a day of seaching Rampart road for any sign of Jeremys car- traveled rd 300 from woodland park to monument…looking off side cliffs as we went along. No sign of anything.
We met up with a young guy in a jeep that knows the area WEll and knows of a spot “on the Colorado Springs side of 300(rampart) that has four canyons that are know for “losing cars”. One particular canyon has a ravine that has four cars in it (cannot be seen from road) but access to the bottom is only attainable through trailhead. We have to head back toward home in littleton from monument but he has offered to drive down and check it out before dark. I’ll check back with updates.-Bren

The jeep was dark green…the man’s name was Brady-he used to work with search and rescue in that area but has since moved to Denver-he seemed to be up there exploring today-he hadn’t heard that anyone was missing- but once we talked to him he mentioned a lot of places that would be essential to look (given the phone coordinates). We are not familiar at all with anything south of where we were looking. We focused most of the day on Rampart Range Rd from Woodland Park going north-all the way to monument, he passed us outside monument to see if we were ok…(nice guy!) He offered to continue looking on Rampart rd -southern part from monument- until dark. I got a text from him at 10:00 tonight saying he had been able to search TWO areas, but found no sign of “departure from the road”. Not sure if he made it to the canyon that had all the old cars in it. He certainly knew exactly where the most likely places might be. I ask him to post his search there. Pls let me know if I can help any further -Bren

To the Griess Family our thoughts are with you! Is it possible that his car would have been towed or stolen if it was there overnight? Leaving him on foot? Check the local tow lots.
Can we get the search team with their search dogs to help? We are all praying for him and your family, God be with him!

McCook Daily Gazette: Native Nebraska Missing in Colorado

WESTMINSTER, Colorado — Friends and relatives of a Minden, Nebraska, native are appealing to the public for help in finding the missing man.

Jeremy Griess, 39, Westminster, Colorado, has been missing since April 11. Family members believe he may have gone into the mountains near Woodland Park, Colorado.

Jeannie Corona of Apple Valley, California, wrote to the Gazette asking our help.

“Jeremy has many people looking for him and praying for his safe return. From the moment we were alerted of his disappearance last Thursday, we rallied around his family to offer prayers and encouragement. The number of supporters continues to grow as membership in the Facebook group, Help Find Jeremy Griess – Missing Since 04/11 has now reached 400. This group was started yesterday,” she said.

“Jeremy’s family believes he may have gone into the mountains close the the town of Woodland Park, Colorado. People have been searching the area tirelessly for any sign of him or his vehicle but to no avail. He has a Web site with current information: http://www.jeremygriess.com\”

    Kelsey Smith Act

Please see the below link. It is the case that led to the established law in KS, NE, and MN requiring cell phone companies to provide data to law enforcement agencies, in order to track missing persons, in exigent circumstances.

    http://www.house.leg.state.mn

Family members are trying to persuade AT&T to send an engineer to the cell tower. With his phone records and LAC and CID information from data sent to his phone up until 4/14, we hope an engineer can help us locate Jeremy.

Issuance of a subpoena does not automatically compel release of information. It does not have the same force as a warrant. In my daughter’s case (Kelsey Smith) a subpoena was issued and the cell phone company refused to comply. It was very frustrating, particularly since I was a cop when my daughter was kidnapped and I knew what procedures had to be followed.
AT&T has an excellent emergency call center and works well with law enforcement. Certain criteria has to be established before the information can be released and it can only be released to law enforcement. It cannot and will not be released to the family nor will any phone provider do as the family is asking because of federal laws in place. AT&T and Sprint both helped write the Kelsey Smith Act in Kansas. All of the big three (Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T) are on record supporting the act when it was passed in Minnesota. Even if the state had the Kelsey Smith Act, the information will not be released to family members. It is only released to law enforcement.

    • Kim 2:29 pm on April 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Your Police/Sheriff’s Departments should be able to obtain a subpoena through your local County/District Attorney to get the phone records from AT&T. And then also those departments can do
what is called an off-line search thru NCIC. What this is, is the law enforcement agency calls the Federal agency NCIC and ask them to do an “off-line” search for Jeremy and also the vehicle. What this will do is tell them if any other law enforcement agency that may have had contact with Jeremy or the vehicle before it was known he was missing.

Nebraska.TV story: Minden Native Missing in Colorado

A Minden family is clinging to hope even though they haven’t heard from their son and brother
    for days.

Jeremy Griess, who grew up in Minden and currently lives in Denver, went missing on April 11th.

Authorities don’t have many clues as to what happened to him —  just a few cell phone hits.

The Griess family is in Colorado looking for clues and working with authorities.

It has been a week since 39-year-old Jeremy Griess seemingly disappeared.

Tony Griess, Jeremy’s brother, said, “A lot of texts and messages were sent, but nothing was
    returned.”

That has his family worried besides the fact Jeremy recently went through a divorce.

Cassandra Kanter, Jeremy’s sister, said, “We’re really counting on local people around the area that know the area that are out and about.”

They’ve put up posters, set up the website http://www.jeremygriess.com and with a team of volunteers mapped out the mountains of south-central Colorado. Yet, many of the volunteers left after the weekend to return to work.

Ted Griess, Jeremy’s father, said, “It’s kind of a small team you’re looking at right now from this area. So, our intent is to make contact with all the police forces and the surrounding sheriff
    departments in the county.”

Police said while they’ll follow up on leads it is not an active search since there’s no indication of foul play.

Investigator Cheri Spottke, with the Westminster, CO Police Department, said, “He could have decided he was just fed up with life and needed a break and wanted to travel and live in Tim-Buck-Two and that’s not a crime.”

There hasn’t been any activity on his bank or credit cards. However, police have traced his cell phone. The most recent hit happened on April 14th in the Woodland Park area.

“In a few hours he traveled from the mountains down to Colorado Springs. So, the potential
that he traveled out of Woodland Park to some other location is possible,” said Spottke. “So, we just don’t know where to look for him at this point.”

The Griess family isn’t giving up, but fears Jeremy may have gotten lost or hurt himself while hiking.

“Every time I see a missing person report on television, I would stop and say ‘that’s too
bad’ and then go on with my day. But when you are thrust into the situation yourself, you realize the pain they go through,” said Jeremy’s dad.

Jeremy is described as 5’10, 165 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He may be traveling in a black Honda Accord with the Colorado license plate 940 JSE.

    Reporter’s Notes by Jessica Phinney:

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Westminster Police Department at (303)658-4360. It’s case number 2010 6054.

Ted and Family – Praying that Jeremy is found and that you remain strong during this period. I have called several acquitances from CO to see what they know about the area and who might be some good contacts. Check with some horseback riding clubs and maybe even a mountain climbing group. There should be several search and rescue groups in the area as well as a few outfitters who take hunters in. We will find him – keep the faith!

We went up to the crags past the Menenite camp to the next parking lot area. We searched over the cliffs going up there as well. We did not find anything but will continue looking.

Has anyone hit the roads up by Golden Bell in Divide? A lot of those roads look okay for cars, but are not. Also has anyone talked to the boy scouts in the area? They hike those trails frequently. Also, anyone check off of Teller 1 going through Florrisant towards Cripple Creek? There are some alternate routes in that area that are easy to miss as well. Wish I could be more help.

We were told to start with CR51
      CR511
      Forest Rd 357
*posted fliers, handed out fliers, spoke with campers, bikers, and ATVers. Also checked a couple private roads back here, no numbers
      Painted Rocks Rd
      67 to Cripple Creek
*stopped at every possible place for a car to go over
      67 to Deckers
      Abbey Rd
Westcreek Rd to Pike Peak Resort
      CR 126 for 6 mi
*stopped at every possible place for a car to go over
      So. Platte 67 through Sedalia
Rampart Range, only 2 miles. Black out
~didn’t have a great car to hit a lot of back roads

John Butler and a group of biker riders hit the following:

      CR 22
Rampart Range Road – To the gate closure
      Forest Road 312
      Carrol Lakes Road
      Forest Lakes Road
      Forest Road 314
      Forest Road 315
      Forest Road 320
      Forest Road 322
      Forest Road 323

I hit all the campgrounds off of Hwy 67(but none more than one mile off the highway – there are some deeper in, which were hit has been my understanding) early in the morning between Woodland Park and Decker. Went 10 miles up CR 78(Painted Rocks Road) and all logging/access roads off that section.

      Then Also:
      FR 345
      FR 346
      FR 391
      FR 342
      FR 339
(and various logging roads off these until the stopped)
      CR 79
      CR 73
      CR 66

Going through my notes, I did not have the road #s for these but covered them and wrote the following down:
      Casey Slumber Road
      Rainbow Falls Road
      Trout Creek Road
      Quaker Ridge Conference Center Road

Please note if anyone is going to hit the Forest Roads, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, ATV or motorcycle. Be careful…..Some of these roads end suddenly and are difficult to turn around on, especially the logging paths off the Forest Roads.

I’ve checked the trailhead at the end of Edlowe Rd (CR28), just below Catamount Res.

I’ve driven through the following steets in the Tranquil Acres Residential area:
Orchid, Narsissus, Marigold, Juniper, Blossom, Iris, and Gentian. In addition to the marked trailhead at the north end of the subdivision there is at least one other un-official trailhead, but there were no signs of his car there either. There may be more un-official trail heads in the area, but I did not have the time to canvas the entire neighborhood.

We drove south on Hwy 67 towards Cripple Creek and stopped at a number of curves with steep dropoffs and we looked for cars that might have driven off.

We drove up the dirt road towards The Craigs Campground. We made it to the Mennonite camp before we had to turn around because of ice on the road. Jeremy could have pushed his car farther up the road if he was determined, so that area should be checked better.

Anyone check Mueller State Park to the east of the highway past the Mennonite (?) Camp? Its in a valley with steep rock walls on both sides and dense trees and brush. I love to go there to take a breather, its worth checking out. Blessings…

    Updated Video on KKTV (2:11)

A Colorado family is anxiously searching for any sign of 39-year-old Jeremy Griess. The Griess family believes he went missing in Teller county more than a week ago. No one has heard from him since Sunday, April 11th. Based on the last traces of his cell phone, the family is centering their search on a 20-mile radius around Woodland park. The family is hoping more people volunteer to help find Jeremy.

Rosa May is a waitress at Jo-Mama’s Pizza and Pasta, in Woodland Park. She empathizes with the family and wants to help find Jeremy. “The family members came in very upset, brought in fliers, saying last time they saw him was on such and such day, and he’s not normally a person who would disappear, so they’re scared something majorly bad happened to him,” says May.

Cassandra Kanter pleads for help in finding her brother. “We are really counting on local people, that know the area, and that are out and about,” says Kanter.

While the search still continues, many volunteers have had to get on with their lives and get back to work. Jeremy’s father, Ted, is trying to cope with the pain of missing his son. “Every time I see a missing person report on television, I would emphasize and say ‘that is too bad,’ then I go on with my daily life. But when you are thrust into the situation yourself, you realize the pain they go through,” says Ted Griess.

The family believes a key to finding Jeremy is finding his car, which is also missing. It’s a 1999 two-door Honda Accord. It’s black with a roof rack on the top. The Colorado license plate is 940-JSE. To see a picture of the car, click on the photos tab at the top of this story.

Fox 21 Colorado Connection Story: Hiker is missing in the Woodland Park area

TELLER COUNTY, COLO. — Westminster Police are asking for the public’s help with information on a missing hiker.

Jeremy Griess disappeared on April 11, 2010, from his home in Westminster. Jeremy is 39 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds, has dark brown/black hair and hazel eyes. He has a faint scar above his lip.

Griess’ family believes he was last wearing jeans, a t-shirt and boots. He is driving a 1999 black two-door Honda Accord with a bike rack on the roof (CO tag 940 JSE).

Until Saturday, his family had no information on his whereabouts. However, using cellular phone data technology, they now believe he is within a 20-mile radius of the AT&T cellular phone tower in Woodland Park, most likely the northwest, west or southwest sectors.

Based on areas he frequently visited, they believe the most logical search areas are the following:

    *  Along Highway 67, between Deckers and Woodland Park

    *  Along Highway 67, between Divide and Triple Creek

    *  On highway 24, between Eleven Mile State Park and Woodland Park

Search efforts Sunday are being coordinated from a public parking lot directly in front of the Teller County Sheriff’s office, located on Hwy.24 in Divide. The family requests that anyone interested in helping search for Jeremy meet at the parking lot after 11:30 MST to better coordinate efforts.

The family understands that it is not uncommon for someone to “go missing.” However, they say this is very uncharacteristic of Griess, who is an excellent communicator. “We are deeply concerned that he is injured, and we are desperate to find him before we run out of time. We have a lot of ground to cover,” said sister Amy Cannella.

Anyone with information in this case can contact the Westminster Police Department at 303-658-4360 and reference case number 2010 6054.

Information provided by Jeremy Griess’ sister Amy Cannella.

Search Crews Look For Missing Man In Teller County

No one has heard from 39-year-old Jeremy Griess in a week. Family and friends are arriving from out of town and out state to help look for him in Teller county. Griess is familiar with the outdoors but his family is worried for his safety. “A lot of messages and texts were sent and just nothing was returned,” says Tony Griess, Jeremy’s brother.

So, Tony contacted Jeremy’s cell phone provider looking for clues. The Griess family tells 11 news that Jeremy’s love for the outdoors brought him to Teller county, and they know this because they traced his last known cell phone signals. “We’ve been working hard with AT&T and we’ve actually used other cell phones to localize towers … and we believe we got it pinpointed to Woodland north to Deckers,” says Tony Griess.

His sister Cassandra Kanter says it’s very unusual for Jeremy not to call. “Jeremy is the most precise person always, ya know, let’s us know things and is detail-oriented … just odd for him all of a sudden to not communicate with anybody,” says Kanter.

Dozens of friends are mapping out where to look while the family clings to hope. “I just want all the eyes and ears out there that are living around here to look for him and his car. I just have a feeling in my heart that he is there and he needs someone to find him,” says Kanter.

Jeremy’s sister believes if they find his car, they will find him. Jeremy’s car is a black 1999 two-door Honda Accord, with a roof rack. The Colorado license plate is 940-JSE.
If you have any information on where Jeremy Griess is or if you see his car you are urged to call the Westminster Police Department at (303) 658-4360.

Denver Post Story: Family worried about missing Westminster man

Westminster resident Jeremy Griess disappeared on April 11 and family members are asking for the public’s help locating him.

Griess left his Westminster home last Sunday, family members said. They believe he was driving his black, 1999, two-door Honda Accord equipped with a roof rack. Cellular “pings” from Griess’ phone put him in the Woodland Park area on Monday with an additional “ping” from an unknown tower two hours later.

“If people can really be on the look out it would really help us,” said Amy Cannella, Griess’ sister-in-law.

Westminster Police have been working with the family, said Cheri Spottke, police spokeswoman.

“We’ve exhausted all law enforcement resources,” Spottke said.

A final cellular “ping” hit the unidentified tower on Wednesday, she said, and no financial activity has been detected on Griess’ accounts since his disappearance.

Family members are searching and exhausted, Cannella said, and concerned Griess is injured.

“He’s an avid fisherman, a biker, and outdoorsman,” Cannella said. “We’re getting a little despondent and running out of time.”

I saw on the victims heartland that you had a ID for the unknown tower. I contacted a friend of mine that works on the hardware side of cell phones for a smaller company and he is checking with his contacts at other companies to see if anyone they know knows about the tower (it was ID as “LAC 15201” from what I read)

He also had a long shot method that may work for using an Iphone to check which tower is being pinged in real-time instead of via texting records I read were being used. Might be worth a try though he can’t guarantee it will work.

Haven’t seen Jeremy since college, but my prayers are with you all.

“One thing I thought of would be to take an iPhone out there and put it in DEBUG mode. The display shows the cell ID. However, it’s in HEX and may not correlate to the 15201 you were given.

You can put the iPhone in DEBUG mode as follows (works for many GSM-based phones):

      *3001#12345#* then hit [Call]

Then check the UMTS Cell Environment -> UMTS RR Info or GSM Cell Environment – > GSM Cell Info. We don’t know if his phone was on GSM or UMTS. 15201 is is 3b61 in hex, so look for that on the display somewhere.”

Thank you for your comment. We have looked into the LAC 15201 and CID 1111. In talking with an AT&T cell engineer, these do not give us a specific location and actually mean that the tower is trying to locate Jeremy’s phone.
